Adobe CS3 Design – Study in Your Own Home in Detail
By Jason Kendall

For those interested in joining the web design industry, Adobe Dreamweaver is a fundamental criteria to achieve relevant certifications recognised globally. To utilise Dreamweaver commercially as a web designer, an in-depth understanding of the whole Adobe Web Creative Suite (including Flash and Action Script) is without doubt a bonus. Having this knowledge will mean, you can go onto become either an Adobe Certified Expert (ACE) or Adobe Certified Professional (ACP).

In order to develop into a professional web-designer however, there are other things to consider. You’ll need to bolt on programming skills like PHP, HTML, and MySQL. A good understanding of SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) and E-Commerce will help when talking to employers.

Considering the amount of options that are available, is it any wonder that most potential students don’t really understand the best career path they will enjoy. Flicking through lists of IT career possibilities is a complete waste of time. The majority of us have no idea what our good friends do at work – so we’re in the dark as to the ins and outs of any specific IT role. Ultimately, a well-informed choice can only grow via a thorough investigation of several different factors:

* What hobbies you have and enjoy – these can define what areas will provide a happy working life.

* Do you hope to realise a specific aim – for instance, becoming self-employed in the near future?

* How highly do you rate salary – is an increase your main motivator, or is day-to-day enjoyment a lot higher on your priority-list?

* There are many areas to train for in the IT industry – there’s a need to achieve a solid grounding on what makes them different.

* Having a proper look into the effort, commitment and time you can give.

To bypass the industry jargon, and reveal the best path to success, have an informal meeting with an industry expert and advisor; an individual who understands the commercial reality and of course each accreditation.

Adding in the cost of examination fees upfront and presenting it as a guarantee for your exams is popular with a good many training companies. However, let’s consider what’s really going on:

Patently it isn’t free – you’re still paying for it – it’s just been included in your package price. People who take exams one at a time, paying for them just before taking them are much more likely to pass. They’re conscious of their spending and revise more thoroughly to be up to the task.

Hold on to your money and pay for the exam when you’re ready, and save having to find the money early. In addition, it’s then your choice where to take your exam – which means you can stay local. What’s the point in paying early for exam fees when you didn’t need to? Huge profits are made because training colleges are charging all their exam fees up-front – and hoping either that you won’t take them, or it will be a long time before you do. It’s worth noting, in the majority of cases of ‘exam guarantees’ – you are not in control of when you are allowed to have another go. You’ll have to prove conclusively that you can pass before they’ll pay for another exam.

Exams taken at VUE and Prometric centres are in the region of 112 pounds in this country. What’s the point of paying huge ‘Exam Guarantee’ fees (often hidden in the cost) – when good quality study materials, the proper support and a commitment to studying and the use of authorised exam preparation tools are actually the key to your success.

Students who consider this area of study often have a very practical outlook on work, and aren’t really suited to the classroom environment, and struggling through thick study-volumes. If this could be you, try the newer style of interactive study, where everything is presented via full motion video. We see a huge improvement in memory retention when multiple senses are involved – experts have been clear on this for decades now.

Find a course where you’re provided with an array of CD and DVD ROM’s – you’ll start with videos of instructor demonstrations, and be able to hone your abilities through virtual lab’s. All companies must be pushed to demo some examples of their courseware. You’re looking for evidence of tutorial videos and demonstrations and a wide selection of interactive elements.

Often, companies will only use purely on-line training; and although this is okay the majority of the time, consider what happens if internet access is lost or you get a slow connection speed. A safer solution is the provision of DVD or CD discs which don’t suffer from these broadband issues.

We’re regularly asked to explain why traditional academic studies are less in demand than the more commercially accredited qualifications? Accreditation-based training (as it’s known in the industry) is most often much more specialised. Industry has realised that specialisation is what’s needed to service the demands of a technologically complex marketplace. CISCO, Adobe, Microsoft and CompTIA dominate in this arena. Of course, a certain degree of relevant additional knowledge must be taught, but essential specialisation in the required areas gives a vendor educated student a distinct advantage.

Imagine if you were an employer – and your company needed a person with some very particular skills. What’s the simplest way to find the right person: Trawl through a mass of different academic qualifications from several applicants, having to ask what each has covered and what workplace skills they’ve mastered, or choose particular accreditations that specifically match what you’re looking for, and then choose your interviewees based around that. You can then focus on how someone will fit into the team at interview – instead of long discussions on technical suitability.
